Research Internships

This list of research opportunities in ocean acoustics and engineering includes some really good summer research programs. These are some of the most valuable experiences a graduate student can have.

Summer research internships at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO)'s Marine Physical Laboratory
College students in their junior or senior year who are considering a career in scientific research are encouraged to apply for a summer of research experience in marine science and technology at the Marine Physical Laboratory. Candidates should have a strong background in quantitative science with majors in either applied mathematics, chemistry, physics, or engineering.
UCSD Scripps Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program
The UCSD Scripps Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program is designed to introduce bright and energetic undergraduates to research in the marine and earth sciences. The intensive SURF research training experience prepares students to become research scholars, and stimulates serious consideration of graduate study. The SURF Program is commited to increasing the number of students who are from underrepresented backgrounds in the graduate programs leading to a doctorate in the sciences.
NATO Center for Maritime Research & Exploration (CMRE) in La Spezia, IT.
The NATO Center for Maritime Research & Exploration is a civilian research agency of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization specializing in underwater acoustics, oceanography, systems concept evaluation and undersea defence studies. The CMRE Visiting Researcher Programme offers the best and brightest students, university researchers and practicing professionals from NATO nations the opportunity to participate in a dynamic laboratory on the beautiful west coast of Italy, conducting research on subjects of interest to both the researcher and to NATO.
Summer Student Fellowship Program at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)
The objective of this program is to provide a promising group of science and engineering undergraduate students early experience in oceanographic and ocean engineering research that will assist them in their career choices. Students who have completed their junior or senior year of undergraduate study in a science, mathematics, or engineering field may apply for Summer Student Fellowships.
Undergraduate Programs at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)
WHOI has undergraduate programs that are offered in the fall semester for college juniors or seniors majoring in science, engineering or mathematics. The program features coursework in ocean science and a semester-long research project advised by a WHOI scientist or engineer.
